What are electrodiagnostics?

Electrodiagnostics are diagnostic tests that Dr. Ibrahim can use to assess the health and function of your nerves and muscles. The two most common tests are nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG), often performed together to provide a complete picture of how your nervous system is working.

Nerve conduction study

This study measures how quickly and effectively electrical signals travel through your nerves. 

Electromyography

During an electromyography test, a very small needle electrode measures the electrical activity of selected muscles when they’re at rest and during movement. 

Together, these tests help identify:

• Nerve injuries
• Muscle disorders
• Conditions affecting communication between nerves and muscles

What can I expect during electrodiagnostics?

Electrodiagnostic testing usually takes 30-90 minutes, depending on the areas Dr. Ibrahim is evaluating. Before the test, he’ll review your medical history, symptoms, and any previous imaging or diagnostic studies.

During the nerve conduction study, he places small electrodes on your skin, which deliver brief electrical impulses to measure how well your nerves transmit signals. During the EMG portion of the evaluation, he inserts a thin needle electrode into selected muscles to record their electrical activity. 

You may experience mild discomfort at certain points during the test, but Dr. Ibrahim works to keep you as comfortable as possible. Once done, he’ll discuss the findings and explain how the results fit into your overall diagnosis and treatment plan.
